After-Hours Brief Services MH Counsellor

Salary Range: $61,228 to 78,804 per annum

Job Summary:

The After-Hours Brief Services Mental Health Counsellor will provide crisis mental health counselling services 7 days a week after-hours to clients at both Jeremiah McKay Hostels (JMK I or JMK II). This position will involve shift work of 4 days on/4 days off and will be on a Modified Work Schedule. This work may involve accompanying a client to Sioux Lookout Meno-Ya-Win Health Centre Emergency Department for further assessment and advocacy.

Applicants must possess:

  • Minimum level of education required is equivalent to high school graduation and completion of a diploma training program, specific to mental health and social services, at a recognized college Registration with a recognized professional body and/or to become registered within a year of commencing employment
  • Minimum 1-3 years related experience is required
  • Proficient in clinical counselling.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing assessment of risk and safety planning as well as de-escalation and crisis intervention
  • Psychoeducation (e.g. coping strategies, management of mental health issue, relation between substance abuse and trauma, effects of alcohol/drugs, regulation of emotions without reliance on substances or self-harm behaviours, management of triggers)
  • Provide crisis intervention support, facilitate group debriefing and deliver psychoeducational groups where appropriate
  • Provide counselling using a harm-reduction and trauma informed approach to help clients begin to examine their needs.
  • Coordination, linking and referring to other resources (e.g. First Nations community-based services, regional services, specialists)
  • Work with Nodin’s other services, other SLFNHA departments, and external agencies to ensure clients receive other services if required
  • Arrange and participate in case conferences as necessary
  • Communicate recommendations and plan to relevant providers to ensure there is integration of services, a smooth transition and continuity of care
  • Assist the clients in taking responsibility for personal decision making to assist in reducing risk and maximizing students’ emotional, behavioral achievement opportunities
  • Using best practices, develop and use creative interventions to help clients reduce high risk behaviors
  • Using a tracking system, ensure all high-risk cases are met with consistency with active involvement and thorough documentation
  • Report any concerns related to harm to self or others and ensure supports are in place
  • Follow all standard operating procedures
  • Maintain timely, detailed and accurate records in electronic client management system
  • Participate in probationary and annual performance appraisals
  • Attend regular staff meetings as per policy
  • Other duties as required.
